Preparation and handling

alt text

I did not want to spend much money on my first experiment with Soylent, so the container sizes I used for most ingredients will make about a month worth of Soylent.

Use the coupon-code LDP10 to save 11.86 € from bulkpowders.co.uk. When that's not available anymore, you can still apply my referral code HE106807 to save 5€ on your order and make me save 5€ on my next order this way.
  1. Put all non-liquid ingredients in a bowl.
  2. Add coconut milk, oil, some water (how much depends on your taste. I use about 400ml). Blend/stir again
  3. Pour the finished Soylent in two shaker bottles. Shake them and drink throughout the day. Make sure to keep the Soylent cool.
  4. Eat the fish oil capsule(s) and vitamin pill(s).
  5. If you don't feel full enough, add psyllium husks powder to the mix, shake and drink.

You might want to prepare some Soylent for the next days. Just put all the non-liquid ingredients in a ziplock bag.

A final note for the sake of completeness: I don't use any Iodine pills because of thyroid problems and also don't use iodized table salt but sea salt. I will get more than enough Iodine on my days without Soylent.

Diary

  • Day 1, 2013-10-10

I use this spoon scale which works perfectly fine when I put it on the table and use a small bowl that I put on top of it. I did not expect the Choline Bitartrate to smell like fish that bad. It does not taste like fish though. I did not finish my Soylent. I felt full the whole day even though I didn't add any psyllium husks. I might reduce the amount of oat powder. The overall taste was okay, not too exciting. I expected the coconut milk to make it quite sweet, but it wasn't. I added some cocoa powder and honey.

  • Day 2

I did not notice anything special or out of the ordinary today. I don't feel more tired/energetic than usual. Even though I didn't add the psyllium husks powder today I only drank 2/3 of the mix because I felt full. I still find it not sweet enough and think about adding Xylitol/Xucker in the future (high price compared to sugar but it's anti-cariogenic and cariostatic).

The fishoil capsules made my breath smell like fish. I should add that I smell even the slightest hint of fish so it might not bother most people. The fishoil capsules seem to made me burp more than usual (where the fish smell was definitely noticable). For Omega-3 fatty acids I will have a look into algae-based pills and linseed oil as an alternative.

  • Day 3

Woke up from a quite bad case of stomach pains. Diarrhea. Pain was gone afterwards. Can't say if it's because of the Soylent or something else. To find out what caused this I switched to normal food today (Müsli in the morning, soy schnitzel with brown rice for lunch, bread rolls for dinner) but still took the multivitamin pills. I didn't have any issues with bowel movement on the first two days but started the fishoil capsules in the evening of day 2, so they may be the culprit here.

  • Day 4

Normal food again. Tomorrow I'll start with Soylent again.

  • Day 5

Soylent again. Nothing special to report about.

  • Day 6

Not that hungry today. Added real cocoa powder without any added sugar this time. I feel bad for ditching the rest of the Soylent at the end of the day, but I really don't think I should eat it the next day. If you think otherwise or have experience with drinking one batch of Soylent for more than one day, let me know in the comments.

  • Day X

I checked which component is responsible for my stomach pains and diarrhea. It most certainly and unfortunately seems to be the coconut milk. I made some batches with milk and everything was fine. This is especially sad because coconut milk is such a rich and good-tasting ingredient.

  • 2013-10-22

I just gave the coconut milk another shot. We will see how it goes.

  • 2013-11-02

As for now I switched to milk. If anyone has interesting ideas on what to substitute the coconut milk with, let me know in the comments!
