The idea here is to move the ingredients that taste nasty in beverage form to be part of a separate snack cake. For me this is a big deal w.r.t. the salt - I just can't stand salty drinks. I'm also not a big fan of grainy drinks or oily drinks. Drinks that are a bit chalky I can live with.
The cake is useful as it is easy to transport and doesn't have the threat of making a big mess in your bag / backpack / car. And if you want a full meal, having the oil in the cakes means you don't have to carry around oil separately to put in your shaker bottle when ready - instead it's just powder + water, so no inevitably slimy separate bottle of oil to carry around.
You can make a whole lot of the cakes at once - they store well - I usually do a week at a time. I've found the extra time per week to be around half an hour. If I had another skillet that'd go down to twenty minutes - most of the time is just waiting for the cakes to fry.
The pills are optional; if you add another 2g of oil the recipe is still 100% complete, and cost goes down by $0.38.
TODO: Need to figure out how much oil is absorbed by the cakes. Should probably use more than listed to make sure the listed amount gets into the cakes.
For the Soylent beverage: Everything except the masa harina, flour, baking powder, salt, oil, and pills goes in the beverage. There are seven ingredients plus water.
For the corn cakes:
(1) Whisk together the masa harina, flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl. Add 3/4 to 1 cup warm water (110 degrees), 1/4 cup at a time, stirring after each addition until mixture holds together.
(2) Heat 1/4 cup oil in a cast-iron skillet over medium heat until hot but not smoking, about 5 minutes. Meanwhile, scoop a heaping 1/2 cup mixture, and use your hands to shape into a patty, about 1/3 inch thick. Repeat with remaining mixture, forming 8 patties.
(3) Working in batches of 4, fry patties, turning once, until golden brown, 2 to 4 minutes per side. Using a slotted spoon, transfer to paper towels to drain. If pan becomes dry, add 2 tablespoons oil for second batch. Cover patties with foil to keep warm, up to 30 minutes.
