- Can Cialis be used with other treatments for impotence? This paper examines the marketing campaigns for Viagra’s competitors and asks whether these treatments offer a different discourse on impotence. New treatments for male impotence have proliferated since Viagra’s popular emergence on the market in 1998. Two such therapies recently received FDA approval for prescription use: Cialis and Levitra. Therefore, this suggests that three different types of forming films are used in the market for blister packaging used to contain inhibitors of PDE-5. In order to detect trends and new risks in the future, an ongoing survey of the legal and illegal market by analysing samples is needed. ATR-FTIR spectra of the blister packaging of authentic Cialis® and counterfeit Cialis samples showed bands at 2976, 2904, 1431, 1326, 1243, 973, 691 and 608 cm−1, suggesting the presence of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) in its chemical composition. Herein, the chemical fingerprinting of blister packaging using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) of authentic and counterfeit samples of Viagra® and Cialis® is demonstrated. However, when defining the primary exposure variable-that is, Viagra and/or Cialis use, we were able to define as exposed only those subjects who reported using Viagra and/or Cialis before NAION diagnosis.

Using unsupervised methods, samples were separated into three large groups: (i) counterfeit Viagra (seven samples made of PVC); (ii) authentic Viagra® (three samples made of poly(ethylene terephthalate)); (iii) Cialis (authentic and counterfeit) and some samples of Viagra (thirty seven made of PVC with additives of stearic acid derivatives, butyl hydroxy toluene or bisphenol A). Using supervised methods, all samples were correctly classified into their respective classes. Though NAION is a rare condition, the large number of men using Viagra or Cialis suggests that, should an association truly exist, the incidence of NAION could rise dramatically. This provides support, albeit indirect, that should an association exist between Viagra and NAION, it may be limited to individuals with a history of cardiovascular disease.
